"Peking" is actually a cantonese word, and Cantonese is the dialect we speak in the southern parts of China, like Hong Kong, Guang Dong etc. I guess you're more familiar with Peiking may have something to do with the fact that there are many Hong Kong immigrants in the UK, and they would use "Peking" when they refer to the capital.

Whereas "Beijing" is Mandarin, and Mandarin is the only official language in China, so I guess it would make perfect sense that the Chinese gov prefers foreigners to pronounce the capital city in Mandarin instead of Cantonese, so they have been reinforcing it (through the Media?) and educating people to use Beijing instead.

The two actually writes exactly the same in Chinese characters. Got it?

In response to:How to pronounce "Beijing" - is it a French word?

When I was at school it was 'Peking' and that's the version I still use.

In response to:Such a cute baby......

Hi Jake, Sorry about your previous dog, I just hope he ended up in a good place and in good hands. I agree with you about not having a dog if you know you're not gonna be able to take full proper care of them without having to leave them with other people, that's very sensible of you. But here in Hong Kong, there are way too many irresponsible pet owners, who're out working all day, and just lock their dog up in a cage. It's very sad for the dogs...

Thank you for popping in to see my blog.
They get so lonely.
I miss the unqualified love from an animal.
I had a dog a number of years ago (actually he was not mine) I fell in love with that dog.....do you believe that you can do that. He spent more time with me than at home. Later he disappeared on a country road, someone pick him up. I still grieve for him....does that sound weird?
